5.56X45mm NATO Ammo For Sale

Originally chambered for the M16 rifle and developed in the United States, the 5.56x45mm NATO is classified as an intermediate cartridge. It is a standard cartridge for NATO forces and many non-NATO countries. It is based on the .223 Remington cartridge.

The 5.56X45mm was developed as an option for the more powerful 7.62x51mm NATO. The U.S. saw it fit to develop an intermediate cartridge with less recoil for lightweight rifles. The U.S. military adopted Armalite’s M16 rifle in 1963, thus the .222 Remington special for which it was calibered was renamed the .223 Remington and then standardized for the military as the 5.56x45mm NATO. The .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm are not the same though.

The 5.56×45mm NATO has 1.85 ml (28.5 grains H2O) cartridge case capacity. The 5.56×45mm NATO SS109/M855 cartridge with standard 62 gr. lead core bullets with steel penetrator will easily penetrate from 15 to 20 inches (38 to 51 cm) into soft tissue mostly in favorable circumstances.

The 5.56x45mm NATO is more advantageous than the 7.62 NATO as both are equal in terms of lethality with the 5.56x45mm NATO capable of better penetration of metal plates, reduced recoil and signature, half the mass and volume, shorter time of flight and flatter trajectory, rifles chambered in 5.56 are lighter with a greater probability to hit target.
