Smith & Wesson

Smith & Wesson is as iconic as apple pie. This brand of handgun has been featured in dozens (if not hundreds) of Hollywood movies. In 1852, Daniel B. Wesson and Horace Smith of Springfield, Massachusetts, manufactured a lever-action pistol which earned the moniker Volcanic pistol. Thus the company was called the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. This enterprise was short-lived and was ultimately acquired by Oliver Winchester.

Smith and Wesson put up their own company and came up with a revolver and cartridge combination which was called Smith & Wesson Model 1.  This model featured the bored through cylinder and self-contained metallic cartridge. However this innovation was already patented as an invention of Rollin White. Smith & Wesson entered an agreement with White for the assignment of the patent agreeing to pay White 25 cents for every sold pistol. For over 10 years Smith & Wesson manufactured the Model 1. When the American Civil war commenced Smith & Wesson hit it big with the Model 2.

The gun company went global in 1867. Russia ordered revolvers and ammunition from the company. The Smith & Wesson Model 3 came to be known as the Russian Model which was actually Wyatt Earp’s choice for a handgun. The Model 3 was the sidearm of the US Army and was dubbed the “Schofield”.

The company underwent acquisitions and different ownerships over the course of its existence.  In 1964, the first acquisition of Smith & Wesson took place. From 1987 to 2001, Tomkins PLC was the owner of the gun company. In 2001 up to the present, Saf-T-Hammer Corporation owns Smith & Wesson Corporation.  With the new acquisition, the agreement between the Clinton administration and Tomkins PLC pertaining to additional safety features of gun designs and limitations on the sale of guns and ammunitions became null and void.

Over the years, Smith & Wesson designed and manufactured revolvers in varied frame sizes.  I refers to the .32 small frame.  M is for the small Ladysmith frame. J is for the small .38 frame and K refers to the medium .38 frame. L is for the medium-large frame and N refers to the .44 Magnum type frame.
