Ammunition refers to the wide range of materials that are used against an intended target. It can encompass a vast array of materials that can be used for defense and offense, including bullets, explosives, bombs, missiles and mines. Nevertheless, no matter what kind of device ammunition is being expelled from, the quality and type of ammunition can be as important as – if not, more important than – the device itself.
is a variety of different ammunition used for firearms. Seeing as there are a
number of types and models of guns, there is a multitude of ammunition that can
be utilized for firearms. Generally, the two groups of handgun ammunition are
rimfire and centerfire. Rimfire ammunition refers to a primer which encircles
the rim of the cartridge and ignites the gunpowder in the cartridge; whereas, Centerfire
ammunition contains the primer in the center of the base of the cartridge.
There are three types of bullet construction: lead, partially jacketed and full metal jacketed. Bullets can be made using a variety of materials although lead is the traditional material for its core and copper or a gilding metal (an alloy of copper and zinc) is the traditional material for the jacket. Aluminum, bronze, plastic, rubber, steel and tungsten can also be used to construct the bullet.
There are several types of bullet design based on the firearm and the intended use. They also differ in shape and size. The size of the bullet, known as the caliber, must match with the inside diameter of the firearm it is being expelled from. The shape of the bullet refers to both its tip and its shank, and depends on the activity being undertaken. For example, a wadcutter bullet has a flat front and no point because it is used for paper target shooting and hollow point bullets are designed to expand on impact, which is more humane and clean for hunting.
When selecting a bullet, not only does one have to incorporate the type of firearm and the activity, but also the type of effect that one would want on the target. Velocity, accuracy and damage need to be considered. For example, military bullets are often made from harder materials because their intention is to penetrate the target and hunters may opt for faster and lighter bullets for their fast moving targets.
There are many factors that one should consider when selecting ammunition for a particular firearm. The right kind of ammunition enhances the firearm’s effectiveness and the shooting experience.
